Mickey consistently demonstrates strategic thinking, relational intelligence and communications competency. My conclusion comes after hundreds of interactions with him in a variety of dynamics — from simple to baffling and beyond — in person, over the phone, video chat, text and e-mail.
Mickey is a communicator who knows how to write for the reader. He writes and edits as if he is the one holding the phone or scrolling down the laptop. He's sharp enough to catch deviation from AP style for numbers at the beginning of a sentence. He's observant enough to grasp that the internal structure of a story is so poor that a reader won't finish the piece. He knows if they won't read the article, they won't share it or like it on social media.
Mickey is a leader who considers the power of communications beyond any one story or post. In everything, his directions and decisions sought to accomplish the organization’s priorities. He regularly utilized keen observations of human nature and organizational dynamics to form and adapt short- and long-term objectives. I've seen him sacrifice short-term movements for long-term values. In this, Mickey positively challenged me through his empathy for others alongside a sincere commitment to the organization’s vision.
From my earliest days working with him at Converge, Mickey had a vision for what his team could do and for what communications could do toward the ministry's mission and values. He compellingly shared what he wanted and how he could get there. At the same time, what he sought to do through the team always had the potential to amplify and achieve Converge's distinct, international efforts. His capacity to create vision within the organization's vision was impressive. His skill to share that clearly and passionately sets Mickey apart from other leaders I've met with. The president of an organization, in my opinion, has an easier time generating vision than leaders alongside the president. To see Mickey lead within the leadership of another truly impacted me.
Mickey isn't just a hard-working individual, although I know the man has put in some monstrous workweeks to complete mundane and marvelous endeavors. Let me be clear: he works hard, but he always collaborates, always reaches out, always includes, even when it's inefficient or goes unreturned.

I learned about Mickey many years ago when his then-supervisor at Illinois State University recommended Mickey for an assistant position with my sports information office at the University of Texas at Arlington. Since then, his career has taken him in several directions, but with one constant: his work ethic. Mickey continues to excel and serve.
